Senior Product Designer

Big things are happening with our friends over at 99designs- we have already made big strides with scaling the engineering team and now I am over the moon to be partnering with their design team to compliment that growth!

First, let me go into who 99designs are
99designs is a global creative platform that makes it easy for designers and clients to work together to make designs they love. They bring opportunities to designers globally through design contests and direct project work, and they have a community of designers located in 192 countries.

Why join now?
99designs are now entering another exciting period of growth with their acquisition by Vistaprint.  What are they all about? They’re a friend to small businesses & well… they’re all about printing! Such as custom ordered marketing collateral, coming together with 99designs’ global creative community means bringing beautiful design to more people & an end to end printed service–it makes complete sense.

99designs will continue to do their thing, as they always have, but they now have greater resources to support and really drive their scaling. Also platform complexity creates interesting and substantial design challenges to solve, and there are individual growth opportunities that will continue into the future.

The challenge
99designs is a two-sided marketplace that connects people who need design (clients), with talented creators and designers from all around the world to collaborate. These connections often lead to lasting relationships, and empower designers on the platform to work remotely, on their own terms.

The Design team includes Product Designers and UX Researchers, who work across the end to end experience for both clients and creators. Each designer is embedded within a ‘Group’ who focus on key parts of the user journey: Exploration, *Connection, Collaboration and Platform. *You will be sitting within the Partnerships & Products team in the Connection Group

In the Partnerships & Products team you’ll help us to systematically scale 99designs’ product offerings. You’ll also support the ongoing relationships with our partners–namely; Squarespace, Square Online, + more–by looking for ways to improve the user experience across our integrations.

What is the role?
As a Product Designer you’ll tackle complex tasks and transform them into intuitive, accessible and easy-to-use designs for many – from the first time user to the sophisticated expert. Achieving this goal requires collaboration with Designers, Engineers, Support, Marketing and Product Managers throughout the entire design process – from pairing with UX Researchers, to creating user flows and wireframes to building out and validating UI prototypes with clients and designers. At each stage, you will anticipate what our users need, advocate for them and ensure that the final product delights them.

Depending on your preferences and experience, your role might include some organic mentoring but with an overall heavy design focus; or perhaps if you’re really keen on leading people this could be a part of your career with 99designs, too. You tell us where your passions lie 🙂

A bit about the design responsibilities:

  • Consistently consider the holistic user experience and potential states (errors, successes, dead-ends) in their work, as well as helping conduct research and translating findings into design recommendations.
  • Proactively contribute to Design initiatives set by the Design team.
  • Demonstrated understanding of layout, typography and visual hierarchy.
  • Use our style guide and previous Product Design work to represent the 99designs brand with a holistic consideration for the future of the product.

A bit about you:

  • Have 3+ years designing successful products/services, including responsive and transactional web apps.
  • Keen interest in collaborative design sessions, usability testing, user flows, wireframes, visual mockups, prototypes and working directly with engineers.
  • Experience working and collaborating in cross-functional teams (such as product managers and engineers).
  • Willing to work and collaborate in cross-functional teams (such as product managers and engineers) in an agile environment.
  • Fluency with visual and interaction and prototyping tools.
  • A good understanding of technical requirements and limitations of responsive web.
  • Experience leading design activities for designated project teams, including planning, scoping and research.
  • Ability to clearly rationalize and justify design work and champion the needs of users.
  • Communicate clearly to stakeholders: business, support and product management.
  • Communicate complex ideas, goals and problems in an accessible way even to those unfamiliar with the project. In design conversations about their own work, keep discussions on-track and focused on delivering actionable next steps.
  • Contribute to the culture of the Design team by participating in other design-led projects, events and discussions, in order to spread design thinking and enthusiasm throughout 99designs and the wider design community.

Why 99designs?
99designs hold their values dearly – they believe in putting people first, and helping other people to create their own success, that design has no borders, and that the journey should be fun. They want every person they engage with to be delighted with the 99designs service and experience.

As they continue to scale, they are committed to building an inclusive and diverse team that reflects the communities in which they operate. They want people to feel like they belong and can bring their whole selves to work. Their aim is to continue to foster a collaborative environment with a keen focus on innovation, growth and ownership.

They are on the journey to diversity – very transparent with their progress, and open to employee feedback. They believe that welcoming, supporting, and celebrating people from all experiences and backgrounds will enable them to build a stronger and more creative environment on their platform and within their own teams. Below are some of the things they do to support their people.

Career development & learning
Career development is huge at 99designs – they are known for promoting from within. There are both formal and informal leadership development opportunities and programs, depending on your passion for either design or people leadership.

There are also a variety of learning and development programs to create lots of space for people to learn in a way that works for them. This includes R&D days – currently one paid day a fortnight, where every single employee can take the day to do a course, do some research and reading, or work on a feature idea which hasn’t had the air time just yet… basically do anything to help them learn + contribute to the business better.

99mentors, a 6 month program, is another company-wide initiative for people who would like to receive mentoring, and for those who would like to mentor others.

Tack on an annual conference and continued learning budget and you will find that you have ample opportunity to develop and grow into the designer you are destined to be!

99designs have a culture of workplace flexibility
Some people work remotely, some people have start and flex finish times, they have part-time workers (4 day weeks, 9 day fortnights)… the common thread between it all is that it’s unique to each person’s needs. Some people have joined with flex needs in their contract, and others have changed as their life and circumstances have! Some people are parents, some are studying at uni – it’s all about what your individual needs may be and how they can support you.

If we weren’t in lockdown… you would find the team working from their gorgeous office in Richmond, which is really spacious with lots of natural light. They have a fully stocked kitchen with lots of things supplied by the local organic grocer, and every Thursday the company enjoys a catered lunch from local small businesses. There’s also a regular free yoga class (and in nice weather it is on the rooftop), and a pretty active running group who run around the botanical gardens or along the Yarra river at lunchtimes. Sign me up!
