affix is delighted to partner with 99designs once again, this time helping to scale their Platform group with an opportunity for a Senior/Lead Software Engineer to join their Internal Services and API team. It’s a great time to join in on the fun, as the team embark on their most complex integration yet – creating a seamless UX with Vistaprint.
Who are they?
99designs is a real success story and a highly thought of workplace for good reason. They’re a global creative platform that makes it easy for designers and clients to work together to make designs they love. Its mission is to champion creativity to create opportunities for people around the world. Founded in 2008, 99designs has grown from a small, online forum into a worldwide community of talented designers that is now the go-to solution for businesses, agencies, and individuals.
What is the role?
As a Platform Software Engineer at 99designs you’re at the very heart of their mission – this is the group that builds the software, infrastructure and tools that every product delivery team at 99designs relies upon. The Internal Services and APIs team own 99designs user authentication services – essentially their account functionality, where every single user journey begins. With the recent acquisition by Vistaprint, some exciting challenges lie ahead, including designing a seamless UX for users moving between Vistaprint and the 99designs platforms. This problem space is all about identity and authentication, system integrations, and data management.
This is a role that suits a technical leader that still loves primarily remaining on the tools as a full stack software engineer. As a leader within the team, you will be involved in defining what ‘good’ looks like, leading technical decisions & architecture, assisting with product development, and overall strategic technical decision making.
The techy bits
The 99designs platform consists of a fleet of microservices written in Go, Ruby and PHP with a GraphQL backend-for-frontend aggregation layer and a Typescript/React frontend.
99designs is an early AWS customer, and has been early adopters of Docker, ECS and most recently Fargate as the hosting platform of choice. Supporting the developers in their ability to ship multiple times a day is a large body of Docker based tooling, Buildkite for continuous deployment and DataDog for observability.
Every team is full stack and looks after an end-to-end, vertical slice of the 99designs product. This means that you own part of the front-end, back-end, storage, and operations – the goal is for teams to be in control of delivering a great end-user experience.
A little bit about you
You are a hands-on, technical leader who thrives on innovation and developing meaningful products. You love building things the right way and making continuous improvements to how we work. Most importantly, you have a positive, people-first mindset and love building teams that foster creativity and collaboration, and you take ownership of everything that comes your way.
What makes them so great?
Well, there’s a lot of reasons! Their people, their collaboration, their motivation and desire to help designers work across borders with greater flexibility and freedom, allowing people to create their own success, and their pursuit of customer excellence; that every customer and creative is delighted by the 99designs experience.
99designs is committed to building an inclusive and diverse team as they continue to scale – they want people to feel like they belong and can bring their whole selves to work. They have a culture of workplace flexibility and wellness, support for working parents, and support for the community – including tech groups, nonprofits and dedicated open source projects. We would love to tell you about all their initiatives…
