Product Management is a funny thing in Melbourne, well, Australia. Still. Each person varies from one business to another on their scope, level of influence and accountability.
The thing that is standard across the board is the lack of roles that enable and support people to get into the world of Product.
What do I mean?
The pathway into this part of the business tends to have a midweight starting point. Streaming from a number of different backgrounds. From my observations, this role is unique. It gives you the opportunity to move into Product at an earlier stage in your career. These roles REALLY do not come around often.
So, what is it about?
With these guys, you will be working with an experienced product team and supporting the business in a number of areas. You are bringing ideas and strategy to life. In this gig, you are expected to help drive delivery, testing, manage and maintain the product roadmap and measure performance. This is a tactical role, highly analytical and exposure to continue to build on your stakeholder management skills. You’ll be given freedom, but you’ll have a lot of help, too.
What about you?
Digital first background is really important here. This is a product and dev driven environment. Eagerness to learn, get involved in solving problems across the business and be ok in a flat, lean and fast-paced environment. Experience with tools like JIRA, Google Analytics is great, but not essential.
Bonus points for those that are able to, or willing, to get involved in content creation and distribution!
Who are these guys and what do they stand for?
I think the fact that they’ve not only survived but managed to thrive in the current climate, is a testament not only to their product, leadership but also culture. Most businesses experienced hardship, but employee engagement has never been higher, there is a sense of purpose, direction and the health of the business couldn’t be better.
It’s flat, lean, fast-paced. It is a good place for proactive and curious minds. Everyone has a voice – no matter what role or level. It’s a really inclusive environment with no egos. They don’t take themselves too seriously but love what they do. And… they’re pretty good at it.
