Mid Level Software Engineer

Melbourne

Affix is delighted to partner with OpenCities to find the next creative & curious Mid Level Software Engineer to join them! This is a remote friendly role, their HQ is in the lovely Melbourne, but we are open to candidates anywhere in Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines.

Who are OpenCities?
OpenCities are a SaaS product startup in the Govtech space. They provide governments around the world with the tools to digitize their resident journeys and revolutionize their community experience. What they do is genuinely good for the world – their product enhances civic engagement and makes life that little bit easier for us all.

The product
Built with and for governments, the OpenCities Platform is a CMS which provides the website, portal and forms functionality modern governments need to master each step of their customer journeys. It’s an exciting time to join the business, as they take their product to new spaces like business intelligence, intranets and knowledge management ecosystems.

The techy bits
OpenCities’ core technologies are C# .NET & JavaScript and React. Their OpenForms product is written in .NET Core with a React frontend, and their OpenCities CMS product is written in .NET Framework, plus standard HTML, CSS (Sass), and JavaScript. They use SQL databases and deploy onto Microsoft Azure using tools like Octopus Deploy & TeamCity to run fully automated CI/CD pipelines.

What is the role?
We are looking for a Mid Level Software Engineer with C# .NET and relational database experience. As an individual contributor, you will write high-quality, well-tested, and maintainable code. You will be working alongside 3 other Software Engineers, a Product Manager, a Designer, and a QA Engineer in an agile, multidisciplinary product team.

You will be actively involved in the product iteration process… safe to say that this is a great opportunity for a developer who takes 100% ownership in what they do and likes to contribute their ideas, and have their opinions directly impact the work that they do.

Let’s jump into the specifics! Day to day you will be…

  • Developing new features and functionality within OpenCities products, taking ownership from development through to production and operations
  • Assuring appropriate test coverage for your code using both unit and feature tests
  • Identifying issues and bugs within the application and modifying the code to fix them
  • Responding to production issues as required
  • Peer reviewing others code and having your own reviewed in a respectful manner
  • Participating in regular retrospectives and providing feedback to improve ways of working

A little bit about you

  • Commercial experience with C# .NET
  • Understand engineering best practices: source control, automated testing, continuous integration and deployment, and peer review
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working in agile, iterative design cycles, preferably as a part of agile/scrum software development teams

Ideally you’re going to be full stack – but if you’re a backend .NET developer & have a keen interest in going full stack, we would still love to chat! The first 6 months in this role is going to be backend project work, so you’ll have time to find your feet before getting into UI.

We’re also open to hearing from candidates with diverse experience across object orientated languages – so if you have solid development skills in Java & want to learn the rest, we’d love to hear from you too. Please don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes – it’s all about attitude!

Bonus points

  • Commercial experience with React and other modern JavaScript web frameworks
  • Experience working with local or state government, non-profits, or in GovTech
  • Experience with content management systems and enterprise SaaS products
  • Experience working remotely in a fast-paced startup, quickly growing and maturing

Why OpenCities?
OpenCities people and their inclusive culture are at the heart of everything they do. Being product people, they are naturally empathetic, and they take pride in helping governments serve better, and to support their communities. This is an invitation to craft your own career – you will meet people internally who’ve had a crack at all kinds of roles over the years, and have been mentored & encouraged to follow their passions.

This is a remote role, but if you are based in Melbourne there is an office in the CBD that you are welcome to work in as much or as little as you like – people are trusted to flex their own time to suit their lifestyles. Kids, studying, cycling, even theatre… everyone’s commitments are understood, supported and celebrated.

Just a little bit curious?! Let’s have a chat to see if this could be your happy (work) place.
