Java Developer | Global Fintech > Scaling up in Melbourne

Choose your own adventure…
If you’re a passionate, humble and an inquisitive jetsetter ready to choose your own adventure >  I think we have something for you.  Let me introduce you to our new friends at Adyen.
Adyen, is the payments platform of choice for many of the world’s leading companies, providing a modern end-to-end infrastructure connecting directly to Visa, Mastercard, and consumers’ globally preferred payment methods. Adyen delivers frictionless payments across online, mobile, and in-store channels. With offices across the world, Adyen serves customers including Facebook, Uber, Spotify, Casper, Bonobos and L’Oreal.
Founded in 2006, with the vision to disrupt the payments industry. Historically, the offerings in the industry were built on old technology and infrastructure. Adyen broke into the market focusing on building a modern infrastructure directly connected to card networks and local payment methods across the world, allowing for unified commerce and providing shopper data insights to merchants. The Adyen platform enables merchants to accept payments in a single system, enabling revenue growth online, on mobile devices and at the point of sale.
An all-in-one payments platform, transacting over $100 billion each year for some of the biggest merchants in the world. The platform was built in house from the ground up back when it all began in 2006 – and the people who built it are still there in the company. Pretty cool if you ask me! In a nutshell, they process payments across 3 main channels: Online, mobile and POS (in store and terminals).
Who are we looking for?
Technically speaking, we are looking for a Java developer who gets their kicks in solving problems and thrives working in a technically challenging role. This role, however, goes far beyond just having the ability to create kick-ass code. The right type of person for Adyen is someone who can work in an unstructured environment, with minimal direction. You have the support there, absolutely, but there is also a great sense of self-management and freedom to go outside of the norm to find creative solutions. No robots here.
WARNING: This is not a sit in the corner and code away to requirements kinda gig…in fact it’s quite the opposite. You will get to own projects from start to finish, working directly with merchants across AsiaPAC. You have the opportunity to help shape the direction of the product, taking on ideas and fleshing those out and breaking it down to stories that you then manage.
The Melbourne office (based out of one of the uber cool WeWork spaces) so far is a modest team size of 2, however, this is where the core tech team is going to form. You might call it the “tech hub” of Australia. What this means for the culture is you need to have a collaborative mindset, be one to investigate and research on your own but also be willing to put your hand up and ask questions when needed to.
It also presents a great opportunity for you to help curate and build what the culture of this team is. Be there to contribute to technical decisions, engineering principles and how the team works together. On top of this, you’ll also be jet setting across the globe with regular training and team workshops in the Netherlands and Singapore.
So yes, you will be required to travel for this role. What does that look like? 2 trips a year to Amsterdam and Singapore, and sharing the once monthly travel to Sydney with your fellow Melbourne teammates.
The nitty-gritty…

  • We need a highly skilled developer with Java (minimum of version 8 – their platform is built on this but they are currently upgrading to 12) and (Postgre)SQL databases
  • Experienced in building multithreaded applications
  • Familiar with a complex, high volume, low latency platform
  • Someone with these skills: an eye for detail, taking ownership, flexible and a team player

What will you be working on?

  • Responsible for full life cycle development: communicating with stakeholders and merchants and monitoring the impact of the feature;
  • Design, implement, test and monitor new functionalities to the platform;
  • Identify and improve parts of the platform to make it more robust and scalable;
  • Work within an unstructured environment with minimal direction
  • Collaborate across teams and time zones to make things happen, review code and be open to feedback.

What will you get out of all this?
There is no other Java Developer role quite like this one, working with the biggest names in eCommerce and the bonus of international travel. Beyond this though is the real kicker that provides the chance for you to really take your career to the next level with the opportunity of networking and learning from the international Adyen team, with access to the creators and authors who have created this amazing platform. Just imagine workshopping Uber’s next product enhancement over a Pint of Heineken, in Amsterdam with the team who designed the platform…
On top of all this Adyen offers a competitive salary, knowledge sharing internal events, exchange program to other offices across the globe and great career opportunities (this is the part that’s up to you!). Become part of an international work environment and truly take that next leap…!
Next steps>>Hi! I’m Luke from affix > there is a lot more I can tell you about Adyen and this role so now it’s over to you. Make sure you apply, but not just “I’ll flick my CV through kind-of-apply” I want to know your story that’s beyond just your CV. Tell me who you are and what you’re most proud of what you have delivered and let’s see if this is the right home for you.
