Who are GK?

Founded in 2007, their leading product (The PKG System) has been developed to enable the precise monitoring, quantification, and reporting of Parkinson’s disease symptoms.  This is a great opportunity to work for a business that has some serious purpose, and who really care about the work they are doing. The role
What we need is a software Engineering Manager. This new role has been created because they are ready to scale, and the areas of which they need you to have the most impact are:

Leadership:
This role will have a strong leadership component, to support and lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers. This position will look after the two major streams of the engineering team (“Sustain” and “New Product”) by providing sound software technical leadership across all aspects of the business. 

Technology is at the core of what GK is all about & it is for sure important that you come with expertise  in their technical stack (Java and AWS), but even more important than the tech is your ability to provide strong leadership to the people, processes and delivery.

You’ll be responsible for building effective teams, empowering them to achieve their goals, and putting those goals into broader context. Your greatest responsibility will be looking after the individuals reporting to you, coaching and supporting them in their professional development, unlocking their potential, and challenging them to step outside their comfort zone to grow and excel.

Delivery:
Being a technology and service oriented medical product company, in this role you will be working with your peers (Hardware Engineering Manager, Business Engagement Manager and Project Manager) and interact with employees, stakeholders and external customers to ensure GK’s products are effectively designed, developed & delivered.

You will ensure that the team has the optimal cadence and velocity to deliver on time by implementing the best engineering principles and processes. For example, uplifting their DevOps practices and maturity, ensuring a high level of unit testing is apart of the engineers everyday life and more. 

Technology:
As part of your team you would look after Development, Testing, Analytics and Infrastructure. You will ensure the use of appropriate architectures, follow the latest industry best practices and capitalise on opportunities to achieve their technology goals.

This role is key in defining the overall technology roadmap (being able to plan for at least 9 months in the future) and will be responsible for determining what development activities are necessary for delivery. 

You will be responsible for identifying when GK would engage with external vendors, decide which vendors to use and provide sign off on what is being delivered along with allocating resources to manage that process.

What you will be doing in your day to day:

  • Accountable for all software product related activities for GK
  • Determine requirements, goals, and objectives from executive management and, when directed, from other parties including customers
  • Manages development teams that design, develop, troubleshoot, debug and maintain software systems (Web Apps, Mobile, Relational Databases, Microservices etc)
  • Provide development team(s) with day-to-day management and direction to successfully and consistently deliver high-quality working software products on time, within budget and to specification
  • Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities
  • Consults with external customers or third parties as directed by executive management and develops trusted relationships with external business partners

More about you:
The ideal candidate for this role is someone who has spent enough time in corporate environments to understand how to navigate their way through similar landscapes, but have transitioned to a smaller product based business and understand how the two environments differ. They will need to be able to deliver quickly, run their team in an agile way and educate customers and the business when needed. 

You will need strategic thinking, software development skills and strong global business acumen to be successful in this role.

  • Experience in leading and managing teams
  • Self-motivated and customer focused
  • Track record working within both Corporate and Start-up environments
  • Proficient in Agile methodology
  • Experience in Java technologies and AWS services
  • Excellent analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact at all levels in this growing global organisation
