What is the role of a CTO in 2019? Well, depending on who you ask, there are various views on what the role a CTO plays. The CTO role description is vague because the job title means different things in different companies.
When you typically think about the role of a CTO, you immediately think about its key mission: making sure that the organisation’s technology fully serves its business strategy.
That’s true, yes. However, what if you’re looking for more than that? What if you wanted a CTO role with an exciting start-up that is now “growing up” and entering the next phase that allowed you the opportunity to not only drive the technology roadmap, but also work closely with the founders on the product vision and help guide the business and its people through this scale-up journey?
Well, you’ve come to the right place then. That’s exactly how we’re defining this CTO role. So, without further ado, let me introduce you to our friends at Uptick.
Who are Uptick?
Uptick believes that in the future buildings will manage themselves via smart connected software, involving humans only by exception. To help bring this future into reality Uptick has created a complete building maintenance ecosystem of smart, integrated technology, to capture and facilitate every interaction people have with buildings. On their way to complete this mission they already helped maintain more than 20% of all commercial property in Australia, and work closely with national brands like Commonwealth Bank, Scentre Group (owner and operator of Westfield) and Smarter Communities, which manages over 5,000 apartment buildings.
Cumulatively, 100,000 buildings and 2.2 million total assets are maintained using Uptick technology with a total of $15,000,000+ invoiced through Uptick every month.
Let’s dive into the product
The Uptick ecosystem offers three distinct products targeting all the different stakeholders involved in building maintenance: Uptick Maintenance helps Facility and Strata Managers to efficiently manage remedial maintenance activities, Uptick Compliance provides transparency and peace of mind to Building Owners by helping them manage the safety and compliance of their buildings & Uptick Workforce is a workforce management tool built specifically for service providers in the fire safety and compliance industry.
All of these products are built on the back of the bSecure open data layer, which connects all these different systems across all of their customers.
And the tech?
Uptick has come leaps and bounds in the last 12 months in the way they design, build, test and deploy their suite of products. They have also experienced some impressive growth, growing the engineering team to 16. Now, the role of the CTO has evolved significantly, and the areas of which they need you to have the most impact is:
Technology and architecture
