UX Designer – 50% Research, 50% Strategic UX | Collingwood | $110k-$120k + Super


Whenever I talk to my UX mates about the state of “agency side” UX Design roles in Melbourne, I’m usually met with one of two responses. Either complete elation or utter misery!

On the plus side, you get a unique opportunity to work across diverse customer domains, user problems, and multiple product mediums. Often gaining exposure to tonnes of new skills and learning from some of the best practitioners around. But on the flip side, with that ever looming and often super tight deadline you feel “limited” in the depths you can truly go learning about real user needs and actually creating value as a UXer. It’s either feast or famine in agency land – right?

But what if there was another way?

Before you wet yourself, hold up! I’m not about to tell you that I’ve discovered the land of UX milk & honey and trust me this gig is absolutely not without its challenges, but I am here to tell you that I’m pairing up with my mates at a multi-award winning creative and brand agency in Collingwood who are going through some awesome growth.

They’re building a brand new UX Design team, with new capability, a new mindset and a new approach. What’s really unique about these guys is that they’re backed by a real Melbourne tech success story, but able to operate as an independent. This means they don’t experience those feast or famine meltdowns like most agencies. They’re able to be strategic with the new client work they win, go deep with research, really uncover real user needs and most importantly enjoy the work!

So, here’s where you come in:
We’re looking for a UX Designer who can help lead the research, discovery and strategic UX practice on client projects. You’ll be working with the wider creative team, with full support to really go deep in understanding the why of users. You’ll conduct workshops, user interviews, feedback sessions and user testing to make sure our client projects kick serious ass!

We see the role split kinda’ evenly across 50% Research & 50% Strategic UX

You’ll be doing these things on the daily:

  • Conduct user research activities to help uncover problem statements and assumptions that can be used to guide the design process.
  • Facilitate and lead design workshops with the wider UX team
  • Help to document client requirements through the User-Centered Design (UCD) process
  • Develop high level and detailed storyboards, wireframes and multi-fidelity prototypes to effectively communicate your design ideas
  • Take a human-centered design approach and rapidly test and iterate your designs.
  • Mentor junior designers and help them develop to the next level.
  • Build Information Architectures (IA) that meet user requirements
  • Present UX deliverables to key client stakeholders
