Ruby on Rails Developer | Exciting scale up business | Smart & humble humans

Affix are exciting to be partnering with an exciting scale up tech business making huge waves in the eCommerce space.  These folk are transforming eCommerce on a Global scale! We are thrilled to be supporting them again, growing their tech teams and preparing them for the next evolution. Let me introduce you to the amazing humans at Marketplacer!
In 2007, co-founders Jason Wyatt and Sam Salter started BikeExchange, a now global marketplace. They soon realised this innovative technology solution and successful formula could be applied to different industries, and hence Marketplacer was born! After over 10 years of growth, a number of businesses underneath their belt, and a passion for transforming their products through progressive technology – they are absolutely smashing it!
What exactly is the product?
Marketplacer is a software platform that allows you to create a two-sided marketplace for products, services, events, bookings and digital downloads. They provide the technology, systems and processes for entrepreneurs and businesses to focus on gaining market share, perfecting their customer experience and marketing their dream. Their online marketplace platform allows you to quickly scale a business and become the place of choice for their customers. What you won’t know is, they have been building online marketplaces successfully on our platform for over 10 years!
So what’s it like to be a Developer at Marketplacer?
Marketplacer is an engineering focused business, so they continually invest in improving their tools, tests, processes and technology. But, first and foremost, they know their people is their greatest asset. They strive to build a culture where everyone is continually learning and growing and as a member of their team you will meaningfully impact all parts of the company, from the direction the company is going, to the product itself, to the people they hire. If you’re motivated, eager and just a genuinely good person wanting to do good things then these guys are for you!
What is it built on?
The Marketplacer platform is built on a modern stack of Ruby on Rails 5 and ReactJS. It relies on MySQL as its database, Elasticsearch for search indexing and runs on Ubuntu Linux servers on AWS.
So experience as a back-end or full-stack engineer with strong skills across the following is ideal: Ruby on Rails, Git, Cloud-based infrastructure. HOWEVER – should you not have exposure to Ruby but have experience in alternate OOP languages and are keen to learn, keep on reading!

  • A keen-ness to add value, suggesting ideas and new ways of doing things or improving the business.. you think it – they want to hear it.
  • A think outside the box type, who is always pushing to grow, try new things, educate themselves and want to learn from those around them.
  • Strong analytical skills, an unwavering commitment to quality, a collaborative work ethic, and cutting-edge coding skills.
  • An understanding of software development techniques such as Functional programming, Object-Oriented Design, Test-Driven Development, Continuous build and delivery

It would be phenomenal if:

  • You enjoy mentoring and blogging to share your wins, failures and insights
  • You have experience in GraphQL

So what’s in it for you?

  • Career progression – what you’re doing now might not be what you want to do six months down the track and that’s totally okay, because they encourage growth, and have the internal opportunities to support it too
  • A nice team of good people, who will always listen and want to collaborate
  • Encouragement to attend community engagements such as conferences, MeetUps, monthly HackerDays hosted in-house
  • The ability to have fun at work, and run your role how it works best for you – they’ll allow you the freedom to craft and create your future, and give you all the tools and support you need to help you get there!
  • Daily MarioKart and Ping-Pong tournaments, where healthy competition is encouraged, and an abundance of cafes/breweries/bars nearby to allow reconnection between your colleagues after intense matches
