To containerize, or not to containerize: that’s the question? – William Shakespeare, 2019
Well, like anything – it depends on the kind of problem you’re looking to solve and why! Yeah, containerisation has some distinct benefits, but it’s not the silver bullet to every problem. So, if you’re a DevOps Engineer that prefers to take a more holistic view of platform architecture, correct tooling and engineering best practice – this role might be exactly the new year start you’re looking for – so read on!
So, who and what are these guys all about?
I’ve teamed up with my friends at a super successful, mid-sized SaaS product start-up in Richmond. Their application has connected over 40,000 people in the construction industry, they’re hugely profitable and better still – they really know how to listen to and invest in the people that make their business a success. Think transparent salary schemes, heaps of perks, health & wellness programmes and the space to work on your own side hustles!
What’s the challenge here?
Well, these guys have recently migrated their entire platform from Rackspace to AWS in order to maximise scalability and continually improve the way they design, build and deploy their suite of applications globally.
In a nutshell… as their resident DevOps Engineer, you’ll own their AWS capability end-to-end!
Even though they’ve only recently made the leap into a 100% AWS solution; they’re no strangers to proper engineering standards – trust me! As a technology first business, they build products collaboratively, in cross-functional, self-managed squads which are aligned to customer’s goals. They have mature, robust CI/CD pipelines which test and build all pull requests and a team of high performing engineers who are amongst the best in the country.
What they’re looking for now though is someone who can take ownership of their AWS architecture, defining what AWS best practices look like for the business and ensure they’re leveraging the right products, tools and services to kick some serious scalability ass in 2019.
What skills do I need you for this specific DevOps Engineer gig?
Glad you asked, friend. As this role will be focussed on owning the AWS solution from scratch, first and foremost you’ll need to be an AWS expert who has designed & implemented AWS platform architectures at scale successfully.
On top of that, we’re also looking for you to:
