DevOps Engineer – AWS, Docker, Lambda | $120-130K + Bonus

To containerize, or not to containerize: that’s the question?Shakespeare, 2018

Well, put simply, the answer IMO is – it depends on the kind of problem you’re looking to solve and why! Yeah, containerisation has some distinct benefits, but it’s not the answer to every problem. If you agree with me; think a bit like this and prefer to take a more holistic view of choosing the right tool for the job – you’re going to want to read on!

So, what’s this gig all about?

The role will be to lead the DevOps function within one of my favourite teams. This crew are a high performing, technology first squad that values modern AWS cloud technology, effective tooling, deep level security and robust CI/CD pipeline practices.

In the last 18 months, they’ve made some serious improvements to the way they design, build, deploy and test their suite of global applications; introducing things like:

  • Docker containers for automated environment builds
  • A Lambda package serving notifications at scale on a specific application
  • A mature CI/CD Pipeline in BuildKite with high-security emphasis

But that’s just the start! There’s tonnes more to do and the team have big ideas on what, why and how they want to evolve their practice.

What’s the future of this role & what impact will I be able to make?

Glad you asked! This one’s going to be a tale of two halves. Of course, you’re going to first have to get up to speed with the current environment and jobs to be done; but ultimately you’re going to be responsible for owning and defining DevOps best practices, workflows and how this business fuels it’s journey through the continuous evolution of the automated delivery pipeline – into a continuous delivery model.

Future projects the guys have in mind are things like:

  • Designing and defining a more robust deployments – specifically with a better rollback strategy
  • Creating alerting systems across the full suite of applications
  • Ownership of Lambda functions for future builds/projects
  • Greenfield CloudFormation projects to improve build times
  • Automated security audits as part of the CI pipeline

There’s tonnes for you to understand, design and own in this role!

What skills do I need for this role Sam?

As a DevOps Engineer in this team, you’ll need to have:

  • A deep understanding of AWS technologies VPC, EC2, RDS, ECS, IAM, RedShift, AMI and Cloudfront
