DevOps Engineer (AWS, Docker, Cloud Security)

To containerize, or not to containerize: that’s the question? – Shakespeare, 2018

Well, put simply, the answer in our opinion is – it depends on the kind of problem you’re looking to solve and why! Yeah, containerisation has some distinct benefits, but it’s not the answer to every problem. If you think a bit like this and prefer to take a more holistic view of choosing the right tool for the job – this DevOps Engineer gig might just be for you!

So, what’s this gig all about?

This role will see you pair up with the DevOps Lead in one of my favourite teams to help them continually improve the way they design, build and deploy their suite of applications globally. This crew are a high performing, technology first squad that values modern AWS cloud technology, effective tooling, deep level security and robust CI/CD pipeline practices.

In the last 18 months, they’ve made some serious improvements to their DevOps practice introducing things like:

  • Docker containers for automated environment builds
  • A Lambda package serving notifications at scale on a specific application
  • A mature CI/CD Pipeline in BuildKite with high-security emphasis

But that’s just what they’ve already done! There are tonnes more to do and the team have big ideas on what, why and how they want to evolve their practice.

What’s the future of this role & what impact will I be able to make?

Glad you asked! This one’s going to be a tale of two halves. Of course, you’re going to first have to get up to speed with the current environment and jobs to be done; but ultimately you’re going to be working closely with the DevOps Lead to implement things like:

  • Creating alerting systems across the full suite of applications
  • A complete rebuild of our CI Pipelines for a new global application
  • Deploying Kubernetes into a test and production environment
  • Automated security audits and penetration testing as part of the CI pipeline

What skills do I need for this role Sam?

As a DevOps Engineer in this team, you’ll need to have:

  • A good understanding of AWS technologies VPC, EC2, RDS, ECS, IAM, RedShift, AMI, and Cloudfront
  • Experience with Cloud Security in AWS including, but not limited to: (Security Groups, Network ACL, IAM, Shield, Encryption, VPC Flow Logs, Certificate Manager, Route53, KMS)

Experience with wide range of tools and practices like:

  • Python, Ansible, PHP
  • At least 1 year’s commercial experience using Docker
  • BuildKite for CI/CD pipeline – or similar (Jenkins, CircleCI, Gitlab et al)
